SPAN 315 Introduction to translation Spanish/English
Course Description: Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: In Spanish 315, we developed an understanding of translation theory through readings and class discussion and came to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct word-for-word translation. Also, in this class, we learned what a translator has to go through before translating and how they prepare themselves for it. We learned tools to find the correct word when one is translating and how depending on which region you are in when translating, the dialect one should focus on. In this class, our focus was on translating articles and magazines from Spanish to English and vice versa we focused on giving a clear understanding of the interpretation. The way to show our advancement and understanding of translation was by taking tests and demonstrating the basics of the translation tools we learned.
