MLO 2: Linguistics
Students develop their knowledge of fundamental concepts in the fields of Hispanic and Applied Linguistics, and are able to apply them in the completion of research papers and data-driven small-scale research studies pertaining to current issues in these areas.
Courses I have completed: SPAN 315, SPAN 314
Linguistics is one of the most relevant elements in learning a language because it develops both written and oral communication skills. Under this criterion I completed Spanish 314: Spanish Applied Linguistics, this course helped me to develop and learn about teaching methodologies, linguistic variation, and didactical problems. In this course I was able to examine and identify which methods are more effective for students learning another language. In this class, I had the opportunity to write a teaching philosophy where I talked about how, as a teacher, I would like my students to feel confident with their language and accept themselves for who they are, as well as accept their peers. Also, in this class, along with two of my classmates, I was able to complete an assignment where we had to investigate the effectiveness of a book for heritage language speakers of Spanish. For this essay, we had to take into consideration the notion that no variation of a language was worth more than another. Thus, we had to look at this book through a descriptive lens by highlighting how they aimed to understand language and its varieties as opposed to trying to impose a particular variety. This project helped us understand more about students' knowledge without having to strip them of their linguistic identity. For the course Spanish 315: Introduction to Translation Spanish-English, I learned skills and strategies to be able to translate and interpret correctly from one language to another. During this course we had a lot of assignments where we had to translate properly according to the topic or the message we wanted to convey. These activities helped us to be able to translate and interpret appropriately under any type of situation. To this day learning and acquiring the theory of linguistics for the purpose of applying it in real life situations, specifically in the classroom, represents one of my greatest challenges.
