MLO 5 Cultural Internalization and Language ImmersionStudents demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experiences, from which they have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities. Course I have completed: SPAN 301S Reflective Narrative: One of the most essential components in language learning and development is immersion in the culture and traditions of the target community. I have always been around Latino communities where most people speak Spanish. However, this course taught me a different and better understanding ofthe literary and linguistic topics of my Spanish courses. The success of having an academic education is by providing our knowledge to benefit our Latino community. For this course, students are able to contribute to the necessities of our communities, which leads to personal and professional growth. My service learning was done at Gil Basketball Academy in Salinas. This academy helped me a lot to get involved in my community by helping children learn the sport of basketball and through this sport to instill some values such as being respectful, being responsible, being fair, honesty and building confidence in the children and young people. The mission of this basketball academy is to empower youth by developing their athletic skills, leadership, work ethic, world view, and enhancing their commitment to the community. This service helped me to understand many social problems that exist in the community, not only in the Latino community but in general, such as gender inequality and the respect that many children and youth lack. On the other hand, this academy offers scholarships for children and young people of low income who want to learn basketball. At the end of the semester I made a presentation, Aprendizaje de Servicio where I talked about my experiences and observations at my service site. This experience helped me personally to become more involved in my community, not only the Latino community but in the community in general.
