Course Description: This course provides an introduction to basic concepts in Spanish Applied Linguistics, with the goal of preparing students to teach Spanish as a second language and/or as a heritage language. It explores pedagogical issues related to second and heritage language development, language teaching methodologies, pragmatics, linguistic variation, and the use of technology in language learning and instruction. Course Narrative: In SPAN 314 we were able to understand how to apply concepts of linguistics in classroom lectures. This course helped to fulfill MLO 2 because we looked at current language teaching methodologies in the classroom and we had to observe the strengths and weaknesses of some of these methodologies. The goal of this course is to prepare students for Spanish teaching as either a heritage language or second language. In this course, I learned about the grammar-translation methodology, direct method, audiolingual method, cognitive code, and the natural approach. The first project I did in this class was about interviewing three people who learned a second language. The main of this project was to investigate the foreign language teaching methods in use. Meanwhile, the second project in this class carried out was on Identify the teaching methods that are used in a class for foreign language students, and identify the practices, and activities that correspond to each teaching method identified. In the second half of the class I learned about teaching heritage students. So the third and last project of this class was a team doing an analysis of a textbook for heritage students. Where we had to identify linguistic diversity, reference to colloquial registers, reference to standard language, objectives and level of the textbook, and how the book addresses the objectives found in the ACTFL standards. Since I plan to continue my journey in the Spanish department, having taken this class taught me the proper techniques that have been beyond resourceful and insightful.
