This service learning class helped me a lot to realize some of the situations that the Latinx community faces on a day to day basis. In the Monterey area I can say that there is more help for Spanish speaking people than in other counties or states but there is still a long way to go to help these Latinx families. I did my service learning at Gil Basketball Academy in Salinas. This academy helped me a lot to get involved in my community helping children to learn the sport of basketball and through this sport to instill some values such as being respectful, being responsible, being fair, honesty and building confidence in children and youth. Something that I was not able to practice in this organization is bilingualism since most of the children and youth speak English. In this organization I had the opportunity to meet three high school students who recently arrived from Mexico. They told me that their change was a little difficult as they had a hard time making friends, but that basketball helped them to make some. One thing I took away from this class was the three young men I was able to help in the academy and their appreciation at the end of the basketball season. At some point I was in their shoes where I had just arrived from Mexico and you feel like you are in a completely different world, you feel lost and you don't know who to lean on. There were days when they asked me if I could help them with their English and math homework because it was new material and they were subjects that they didn't see in Mexico or that were not so advanced. These three young people are the ones I take with me from the service since I was a support for them.
